University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing

The University of Zagreb is a leading educational institution in the country with 31 faculties, 3 art academies and various university centers and departments. As a comprehensive public Central European university, UNIZG offers educational programs in all scientific fields (arts, biomedicine, biotechnology, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences) and a wide range of courses at all levels of study, from undergraduate to postgraduate for more than 70,000 student. The university excels not only in teaching, but also in research, contributing over 50 percent to the annual research result in Croatia.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing is the largest technical faculty and the leading educational and research institution in the field of electrical engineering, information and communication technology and computing in the Republic of Croatia. Since it is a component of the University of Zagreb, FER has its roots in the Technical Faculty, founded in 1919. In 1956, the departments of the Faculty of Engineering grew into four new faculties, including the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Today, the faculty offers significant educational and research and development facilities, including 35 lecture halls, more than 60 laboratories, a congress center, a teleconference center, a central library and 12 department libraries, a student restaurant, sports and recreational facilities on 43,308 m2.

The faculty is organized into 12 departments that represent the central places of education, research and development in various fields. The current research and educational staff includes more than 190 professors and 202 teaching and research assistants, as well as about 3,300 undergraduate and graduate students and 326 doctoral students. All these figures clearly highlight very energetic activities in teaching and research.

The faculty has developed valuable international cooperation with many research institutions around the world, either directly or through inter-university cooperation.

Currently, FER participates in 220 projects, both EU and national, financed by various grant schemes:

• HORIZON 2020 – 21 projects

• BILATERAL – 9 projects

• ERASMUS + – 6 projects

• CROATIAN SCIENCE FOUNDATION – 106 projects

• European Fund for Regional Development – 47 projects

• European Social Fund – 8 projects

• Other – 9 projects

THE ORGANIZATION'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE ALTII PROJECT:

Description of previous experience and recognition of the Partner

The capacities of FER are also visible through OPKK and OPLJUP 2014-2020. with a total of 40 projects through which FER distinguished itself as one of the leaders in the priority axis of Research, development and innovation, as well as in the areas of education and good management. FER was the leading Croatian institution in terms of the success of applications in the FP7 program (in the total amount for FER of more than €16 M) and the holder of 4 projects from the call "Strengthening capacities for research, development and innovation" (2014-2016) co-financed from ERDF, total value greater than 20 Mkn. At the national level, FER is the holder of 156 approved projects supported by the Croatian Science Foundation.

We highlight projects:

1. Advanced methods and technologies in data science and cooperative systems (DATACROSS) (37.5 MKN, ESIF 2014-2017, 1/11/2017 - 30/11/2023)

2. Compact city vacuum cleaner with a universal platform for different types of drives and an information communication system for managing working parameters (RASCOFER-

SMART-EV) (30.5 Mkn, ESIF 2014-2017, 1.1.2017.-31.12.2020)

3. Application of the Croatian qualification framework in the field of biomedical engineering (HKO-BI) (4 Mkn, ESIF 2014-2017, 22.3.2019 - 21.3.2021)

4. International university degree programs in electrical engineering and computing (FER-IN) (1.8 Mkn, ESIF 2014-2017, 12/10/2018 - 11/10/2020)

5. From the H2020 line, 33 projects are being implemented.

Human resources of the Partner

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) has 590 employees, 374 financed from the state budget and 216 from its own funds, of which 196 people are employed in the scientific teaching profession. FER has four buildings with an area of about 35,000 m2. Employees are gathered in 12 institutes, 3 services, 3 centers and the Central Library. The Center for Research and Project Support supports research, project work and international research cooperation, and provides support for intellectual property and technology transfer issues. The FER career center is the central place for providing assistance to students during and immediately after the end of their studies related to the development of students' careers and personal skills. The information support center provides information and administrative support for all processes. Over the last 5 years, FER has strengthened its capacities by acquiring research equipment, primarily with funds from international research projects and capacity building projects for research, development and innovation (>2 M€).
